PANAMERICANA

A forgotten race.


The 35th edition of La Carrera Panamericana took place a week ago (from October 14 to 20). Not many know about this event and in its beginnings it was one of the most prestigious in Mexico. It all started in 1950 when the Pan-American Highway was built with 3,507 kilometers from Chihuahua to Chiapas and the Mexican government wanted to attract tourism to use this highway. With the support of the American Automobile Association, the event was created.

To give you a little more information about the race, it is a rally that takes place in stages, similar to the Dakar but on an asphalt road. In each stage, the time of all the contestants is taken (which, as in all rallies, go in driver and co-driver pairs) and the best time of the last stage is the winner.


During the early days of the race, in the 1950s, it was highly anticipated and both the best Italian and German drivers were keen to participate and win.
